About Sanjo City
It's important to understand where the tools are manufactured and the historical importance that helps play a role in the quality of the finished products.
Sanjo City is located in the Niigata Prefecture on the western coast of Japan's Honshu Island. It lies in the Chūetsu region, roughly 300 kilometres northwest of Tokyo. The city is part of the Tsubame-Sanjo area, which is renowned for its metalworking and craftsmanship, particularly in the production of high-quality steel tools and kitchenware.
Historical Background
Sanjo City's history of craftsmanship dates back to the early 17th century. The region suffered a devastating flood in 1625, leading to widespread poverty. To help the community recover, the local feudal lord introduced blacksmithing to the area. Farmers, who had been left with little to do during the non-growing season, took up metalworking to supplement their income. This initiative laid the foundation for Sanjo's long-standing tradition of tool-making.
Craftsmanship and Steel Tool Production
Sanjo became particularly famous for its production of steel tools, a reputation it still holds today. The region is known for producing various tools, including knives, hammers, chisels, and bonsai tools. The blacksmiths of Sanjo mastered the art of combining traditional techniques with modern innovations, ensuring that the tools produced in the region are of the highest quality.
The process of making these tools often involves traditional Japanese methods, such as "tatara," a form of smelting, and "warikomi," where a harder steel core is inserted between softer steel layers to create a durable yet sharp edge. These techniques have been passed down through generations, with artisans in Sanjo continuing to refine their craft to this day.
The Tsubame-Sanjo area, which includes Sanjo City, is also well-known for its production of kitchen knives, renowned both in Japan and internationally. These knives are prized for their sharpness, balance, and durability, making them a favorite among chefs and cooking enthusiasts.
